Chief Steve Sims

Chief Steve Sims became a firefighter, an EMT/paramedic and eventually the chief because he grew up watching his grandfather who was the fire chief in Albany, Illinois, and his uncle who was a captain on a fire department at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. In addition, he said, “I always liked helping people.”
When he joined Bella Vista’s fire department, he realized Bella Vista was unique with its beautiful woods and hills. He also was impressed with all the friendly and nice people.
Chief Sims started with the Bella Vista Fire Department in 1995 and has been chief since 2006. While employed at the department, Sims earned an Associate Degree in Paramedic Science from Northwest Arkansas Community College in 2003. He also earned a Bachelor’s Degree in 2005 and a Master’s Degree in 2009 from Arkansas Tech University in Russellville. Both degrees were in Emergency Management.
He is certified as a Paramedic and is also certified in the following emergency areas: Advanced Medical Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support and Fire.
The department Chief Sims manages and leads has 39 employees who serve as both firefighters and emergency medical teams. It also has two office personnel.

Deputy Chief Bryan Wolfgang
As the Deputy Chief, Wolfgang acts as the chief when Chief Sims isn’t available. He’s also responsible for the payroll, recording and checking overtime and on-call service.
When someone reports a fire, both Wolfgang and Sims respond to the call. They are in charge of the command center constantly monitoring the fire. They oversee the operation, making certain the firefighters and equipment are in the right place to fight the fire.

Our Firefighters-Emergency Medical Teams and Office Personnel

Firefighters, who also act as emergency medical teams, operate Bella Vista Fire Department’s three stations 24 hours a day, seven days a week with three different shifts.
Each shift has 12 paid firefighters. The firefighters are assigned to one of the three fire stations in Bella Vista.
Station 1 in Town Center has seven people.
Station 2 on the east side has three people.
Station 3 in the Highlands has two people.
The firefighters also answer ambulance calls. They are trained as either paramedics or emergency medical technicians.
The department has 22 paramedics and 17 EMTs.
Also, two office personnel work Monday through Friday handling office administrative duties for the EMS-Ambulance. One person is the Patients Accounts Coordinator for the EMS-Ambulance side of the Fire Department. The other person is the Patients Accounts Assistan t Coordinator and is also Chief Sims Executive Administrative Assistant so she works for both the EMS-Ambulance and the Fire Department.
